The iPhone can access uTorrent Remote over Wi-Fi or cellular data networks.

The uTorrent software connects your computer to the BitTorrent network, which allows its users to distribute large files. Because some users transfer copyrighted media without permission over the BitTorrent network, Apple prefers not to publish torrent apps on the iTunes Store. However, you can use the uTorrent Remote Web interface to control the uTorrent client from your iPhone 3.

  1. Reasons

    • Torrent clients such as uTorrent use the BitTorrent protocol to transfer data. The BitTorrent protocol has many legitimate uses, including distributing open-source software and "copylefted," or free, movies, television shows and music. Some users of the protocol, however, use it to share copyrighted material with each other. For this reason, Apple states that it has "chosen to not publish [torrent applications] to the App Store," as of the time of publication. Therefore, a uTorrent app for the iPhone 3 is not available.

    Web Interface

    • Although no uTorrent app is available for the iPhone, you can use the uTorrent Remote Web service to access uTorrent from your device. UTorrent Remote allows you to log in and control the uTorrent client on your computer using a Web-based interface. Because the service is based on a Web page, rather than an application, it is not subject to the same restrictions as software published through the iTunes Store.

    Client

    • To use uTorrent Remote, you must first download and install the uTorrent Remote-enabled client, which is called "Falcon." Once you've installed and launched uTorrent Falcon, click the "Remote Access Preferences" button and check the box next to "Enable uTorrent Remote Access." Pick a username and password for uTorrent Remote and enter them into the relevant text boxes. Click "Apply" to finish configuring uTorrent for remote access.

    iPhone Access

    • To access the uTorrent client from your iPhone 3, open the Web browser on the device and navigate to Remote.uTorrent.com. Scribble on the screen with your finger to disable the security control and then enter the username and password that you configured in the client on your computer. Tap "Stay Signed In" if you want to be able to access uTorrent without logging in every time and then tap the "Log In" button. To add uTorrent Remote to your iPhone's home screen, tap the "+" icon at the bottom of the Web browser and tap "Add to Home Screen." Tap "Return" to add the service to your home screen; you can now access uTorrent as if it were an app.
