Does Yahoo! Work With Skype?

Yahoo Messenger and Skype are both popular voice-over IP services that let you have voice and video chat with anyone in the world. These two services are in competition with each other, and as of the date of publication, aren't compatible. However, other Yahoo-derived products are compatible with Skype if you choose to use them together.

  1. SBC Yahoo DSL Service

    • If your Internet service provider is SBC Yahoo, you should have no problem accessing the Skype website and downloading the latest Skype software for your computer. The only thing that may cause difficulties for you while using Skype is individual firewall settings on your computer, which have nothing to do with Yahoo. According to Skype’s website, as of the date of publication, only certain ISPs in the United Arab Emirates actively block Skype -- not SBC Yahoo.

    The Yahoo Search Engine

    • If you’re unsure where the Skype website is located, you can easily find it using the Yahoo search engine. Additionally, if you’re looking to download the most recent Skype client for your computer, one of the first links that shows up when you type “Skype” in the search bar is a Yahoo Downloads link to the most recent version. A big green download button shows up next to it, so you don’t even have to click through to another page to download the software, if you know it’s what you want.

    Considerations

    • If you use SBC Yahoo as your ISP and it's having problems or is doing maintenance, it can prevent you from using Skype or accessing the Skype website. If this happens, contact SBC Yahoo using the customer service number on your most recent bill. Either a customer service representative or an automated message will tell you whether there’s a known service outage in your area. When you choose SBC Yahoo DSL service, the company provides you with a router to access that service. Check whether it’s on and the lights on the front panel are green. If you see any red lights, be sure to mention that to the customer service representative. It’s possible that the problem is with your SBC Yahoo-provided router, rather than with your ISP itself.

    Warning

    • Firewall and parental control program settings may prevent you from using the Skype program or gaining access to the Skype website. If you’re the administrator on your machine, you can change your own firewall settings. If you’re at work and you need to use Skype for your job, contact your IT professional for assistance in getting Skype working on your computer. Parental control programs on computers allow parents to block any sites they deem objectionable for their children to view -- including sites their kids might use to make overseas calls or chat online, like Skype. To unblock them, you’ll need a password to change the program’s settings. You can also create a separate login on the computer, so that Skype is always available and you don’t have to change settings every time you want to access it.
