Terminology
-
For beginners, it's a good idea to familiarize yourself with a variety of crochet techniques and their respective names. The Needlepointer and Crochet N More websites provide detailed descriptions of each type of stitch. To create a dangle scarf, you'll need to know the following terms and procedures: chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, treble crochet, beginning, and stitch.
Materials
-
Use neutral colors for conservative styles or bright colors for edgy designs. You only need one skein of yarn to crochet a dangle scarf. If you'd like your design to include multiple colors, buy one skein of each desired shade. Crochet hooks come in various sizes that are identified by width with letters of the alphabet. For this design, you'll need two types of crochet hooks: a size D, which is 3.25 mm, and a size G, which is 4 mm. Using two different sized crochet hooks creates loops, knots and stitches of varied sizes, adding texture to your design.

Neck Piece
-
If you're using more than one color, hold together one strand of each color yarn to crochet at once. Use a G crochet hook to make 13 chain stitches. Work one double crochet stitch into the ninth chain from the beginning, and one double crochet in each chain across to form three chains.
Turn the piece around and work one double crochet through the back-loop of each stitch across. Repeat this procedure 21 times until the neck piece is large enough to cover your neck. On the last row of one end, pull a strand of yarn through the stitching, make seven chains, then secure it to the other end forming a loop.
Dangles
-
Use your G hook and both colors of yarn to create two large dangles. Hold together one 6-inch strand of each color yarn and stitch 36 chains to make your first row. Add one single crochet to the second chain from the hook, and again in each chain across the row.
Once your reach the end, make seven chain stitches, then one single crochet in the second chain from the hook, and one half-double crochet in the same chain. From there, alternate between double, half-double, and treble crochet stitches to create an oval that joins with the end of the row.
Tassels
-
Get creative! Add beads, crystals or silk strands to your dangles and tassels. Make your tassels using the smaller sized D hook. The length of the tassels can be longer or shorter than the dangles, so make as many chain stitches as you like. Cut several strands of yarn about 4 to 6 inches long and fold them evenly in half to make a loop.
Poke your crochet hook through the end of the stitching and grasp the loose strands of yarn by the loop. Gently pull the loop about 1/4 inch through the stitching and remove the hook. Push the loose ends of yarn through the loop and tug firmly to secure.
Finishing Touches
-
Once the neck piece and the small and large dangles are created, it's time for a few finishing touches. Using either size of crochet hook, attach the dangles and tassels to the end of the scarf opposite the loop with a few tight stitches. Wrap the scarf around your neck and pull the dangles and tassels through the loop to fasten it.
