How Recording Works on the Casio WK-3800
The Casio WK-3800 is a 76-key, consumer-level workstation synthesizer. It includes a range of functions, including common sound effects, auto-accompaniment and the ability to record and save performances for later playback. The WK-3800’s Song Memory Mode allows the user to record and store up to five songs using two different recording methods.

Recording Methods
-
The WK-3800’s recording functions are designed with a number of scenarios and skill-levels in mind. For example, inexperienced keyboard players can use the step recording function to input a song one chord or note at a time and then slow down playback to a comfortable pace to learn the song. Experienced players can use the real-time recording function to record a song and then add up to five more tracks to the song to create a complete, orchestrated composition.
Real-time Recording
-
The WK-3800’s real-time recording mode is engaged by pressing the “Song Memory” button twice. This places the synthesizer in record standby mode. Recording won’t begin until the “Start/Stop” button is pressed, but first the user must establish which song number between zero and four to which they want the recording to be saved. Further, the user can select a preset rhythm to play along with by pressing the “Intro/Ending” button and selecting a rhythm. The various rhythms are listed at the top of the WK-3800’s front panel.

Step Recording
-
To engage the step recording function, the “Song Memory” button must be pressed three times and a song number selected to save the recording. The user then plays the first note or chord and enters a note length by using the number pad. For example, a quarter note is created by first pressing the relevant key on the keyboard and then pressing the “2” button. Each button on the number pad corresponds to a note length. When finished recording, the user presses the “Start/Stop” button and can then play back the recording by pressing “Start/Stop” again.
Multiple Tracks
-
The WK-3800 offers up to six tracks for each recorded song. This function is available in real time and step recording. Once the initial track is recorded, further tracks can be created by first pressing the “Song Memory Track” button until the desired track appears in the display and then repeating the recording procedure for the first track. In real time mode, the initial track will play back as you record subsequent tracks. This will not occur in step recording mode.
