Can I Plug My External Drive Into My Archos 705?
The Archos 705 WiFi, released in 2007, is a portable video player and tablet with web browsing capabilities, photo format support, Flash game compatibility and support for movie rental services. In addition to its internal hard drive and other external storage options, the Archos 705 WiFi allows users to transfer media from an external hard drive via a mini USB port. Consult the tablet's instruction manual before connecting your device to an external HD.

Using an External HD
-
To connect an external HD to your Archos 705 WiFi, plug the large end of a USB cable into an external drive and the small end of the cable into your tablet via the mini USB port located at the bottom of the unit. Turn the drive on if necessary. A double browser window will appear on the device's screen, allowing you to copy and move files from one device to the other via drag and drop. The Archos 705 allows you to copy or move single items or copy all files at once.
Other External Storage
-
In addition to external hard drive connections, you can connect the Archos 705 WiFi to your PC or Mac. When connected, your home computer essentially acts as an external hard drive, allowing you to transfer files in much the same way. Via sync options on some PC media players, you can set the devices to automatically share media, such as music files. The Archos 705's mini USB port also supports digital cameras and card readers.

Internal Hard Drive
-
The Archo's 705 WiFi comes with one of two internal hard drives. The 80-gigabyte model stores roughly 100 movies, 800,000 photos or 45,000 songs while the 160-gigabyte model stores about 200 movies, 1,600,000 photos or 95,000 songs. The amount of media your device can store varies, based on the bitrate, encoding quality, resolution and size of your media files. Because Archos does not offer an HD upgrade service, the hard drive size of the device cannot be changed.
Considerations
-
The Archos 705 connects to external drives only via USB. It will not work with Firewire, so transferring large files may be a time-consuming process. You cannot copy files larger than 4 gigabytes to your Archos device. Though you do not need to install new drivers to connect to your computer, Archos devices do not support outdated operating systems such as Windows 95, 98, NT or Mac platforms from the same era. When connecting the device to a computer, always eject the Archos from the computer before disconnecting to avoid loss of data. The 705's USB port does not support devices such as mouse, keyboard, Ethernet adapter or printer.
