My Dreamweaver CS5 Hangs on Start

If Adobe Dreamweaver CS5 Web design software hangs when you open a document, you can fix the problem by modifying your computer’s system registry. "Hanging" is when it takes up to a few minutes for Dreamweaver to open your document, and this makes you unable to take any further actions in Dreamweaver.

  1. Hang Problem

    • Adobe reports that both Dreamweaver CS5 and Dreamweaver CS5.5 can hang and become unresponsive when some users try to open a document. The hang time can last from 30 seconds to several minutes. You won’t be able to use the program until the document successfully opens in the program window. The hang problem is caused by Dreamweaver’s integrated “Resolve to IP Address” feature. To fix the issue, you’ll need to edit your computer’s registry settings to disable the “Resolve to IP Address” feature.

    Backup Registry

    • The registry contains important system information that your computer requires to work correctly, so take a backup copy of the registry before carrying out the procedure. Access the registry by entering “regedit” into the “Search” box at the bottom of the Windows Start menu. In the Registry Editor window, click and highlight "Computer" on the left, and then click “File” followed by “Export.” Type a name for the backup into the File Name input field, and then click the “Save” button. If your computer develops problems after you modify the registry to correct the Dreamweaver hang problem, you can restore the registry with the “Import” feature in the Registry Editor.

    Locate Registry Key

    • Now that you’ve backed up the registry, modify the entries that cause the Dreamweaver problem. Navigate through the registry with the folder tree menu in the left pane of the Registry Editor window. Select “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” followed by “Software,” “Adobe,” “Dreamweaver CS5” and “Remote Download.” Click and select the “Remote Download” key on the left.

    Edit Registry Key

    • Once you’ve found the key, you can now modify the item to solve the Dreamweaver hang issue. Click “Edit” in the Registry Editor menu, and then point to “New” in the drop-down menu. Select “String Value” from the context menu. Type “ResolveRemoteURLToIPAddress” into the string value name field. Registry Editor adds the value to the right-hand pane of the window. Double-click the “ResolveRemoteURLToIPAddress” string value, and then enter “FALSE” as the value data. Click the “OK” button to store and implement the changes, and then exit Registry Editor. When you start Dreamweaver by opening a file, the program should start immediately without hanging.
