Why Is Msiexec.exe Always Running?
Msiexec.exe is an essential component of the Windows operating system, but it should not always be running. If you see it running continuously in Task Manager, your computer may be infected with malware. By learning about how Msiexec.exe should behave, you will be able to troubleshoot your PC and determine whether your computer security has been compromised.

Msiexec.exe
-
Msiexec.exe is a Windows component that activates when you install new software. Many Windows files use installers that run in the MSI file format. Msiexec.exe is the process that reads those files and launches the install wizard. While active, Msiexec.exe can use a considerable amount of system memory, and this is why most installers ask you to close other programs before proceeding. Msiexec.exe will typically disappear from Task Manager once the new software has been installed on your computer.
File Location
-
Like all core Windows programs, the Msiexec.exe component resides in the System32 folder. You can access this folder by clicking "Start," "Computer," "Windows" and then "System32." Depending on your permission level, you may or may not be able to access the items in this folder. If you do have the necessary folder permission to access Msiexec.exe, you should not attempt to delete it. Additionally, if you see this process running in the Task Manager, do not end it.

Msiexec.exe Running Continuously
-
On a healthy Windows PC, Msiexec.exe should not run continuously. If you have not installed any new software since you turned the computer on, it should not be running at all. You may see the process briefly in Task Manager when you uninstall programs through the Control Panel. You can verify the file location of an active Msiexec.exe process by right-clicking on the process and then clicking "Open File Location." You should be highly suspicious of a process if it does originate from the "System32" folder.
Malware
-
Malicious programs often masquerade as core Windows programs to hide from antivirus programs. If you find Msiexec.exe anywhere but in the System32 folder, delete it immediately and then scan your computer with your antivirus software. Your AV software will be able to detect a legitimate version of Msiexec.exe from a malware version because it can see where the file is stored on your hard drive. Run a boot-time scan if your antivirus software supports this feature. This special scan will search for malware before Windows loads, which can prevent malware from replicating itself to other parts of your hard drive.
