A virtual private network allows authorized users at remote locations to enter a local area network via the Internet to access files. The user enters the network by following instructions that were set up by his network administrator, then accesses files the same as he would if he were at the office. There is no separate syntax for any file.

  1. File Syntax

    • Generally speaking in computer language, syntax means the spelling of a computer command using letters, numbers and symbols. When a file is stored on a computer or in a network, its syntax includes the routing path to where it is stored, the name of the folder or folders in which it is located, the name of the file and the suffix for the type of file it is. For example, a file with a syntax "E:\user\docs\Letter.txt" identifies a text file named "Letter" located on the E drive in the "docs" folder that's included in the "user" folder.

    VPN Access Syntax

    • To access a VPN, a remote user logs into the Internet and enters the LAN address in his browser, the same as any other web site. For example, the syntax, "http://www.thecompany.com/login" would route the user to the main router of the LAN at The Company and open the log-in page. He may have the address programmed into his laptop to double-click on an icon on his desktop to automatically connect. He then enters his username and password in the areas provided and clicks on the appropriate button to enter the network.

    File Access Syntax

    • When properly connected, the user's computer desktop looks the same as if he were at the office with an Ethernet connection. If he clicks on "Computer," his directory shows all programs, folders and files to which he is authorized to enter or open. He accesses files by clicking on icons to start programs or open folders. He can even send documents to the printer or enter his mailbox. If he needs to type in the syntax as is necessary when using DOS, it is the same as the file address example, "E:\user\docs\Letter.txt."

    VPN Security

    • Network administrators go to great lengths to provide security measures to keep unauthorized users from entering LANs via their VPN connection. If you do not have authorization to enter a LAN via a VPN connection, you must not attempt to enter, even if you know the syntax for the site and the files, and know an authorized employee's username and password. To enter a site without authorization and to access files to which you don't have permission constitutes hacking, a violation of state and federal laws that can carry severe penalties.
