Warlock Specs for 4.0.3A

Patch 4.0.3a was the last patch before the Cataclysm expansion in the online game "World of Warcraft." The patch was particularly damaging to Warlocks, as Blizzard had determined that those characters were simply doing too much damage and decided to cut the damage dealt by almost all Warlock spells by 12 percent in this patch. Despite the damage reduction, the preferred specs didn't change much from previous patches.

  1. About Warlock Specs

    • Like all "World of Warcraft" character classes, warlocks have three talent trees that they can specialize in. The Affliction tree revolves around placing curses on your opponent and letting them tick away for massive damage. The Destruction tree focuses on casting direct damage spells at your opponent. The Demonology tree enhances the warlock's minions, making them individually more powerful, as well as allowing them to make the warlock more powerful as well. As of the 4.0.3a patch, all three trees are viable for leveling, raiding and player-versus-player uses.

    4.0.3a Affliction Spec

    • The best 4.0.3a affliction spec will focus your play style on getting as many curses as you can on the target, then filling the time with direct damage spells until you need to refresh your curses. The spec will require every talent in the affliction tree except "Curse of Exhaustion," "Improved Fear" and "Improved Howl of Terror." The spec will also require you to max out "Bane," "Shadow and Flame" and "Aftermath" from the destruction tree. This leaves you with one free point to place anywhere you choose, depending on your personal play style.

    4.0.3a Destruction Spec

    • A warlock specializing in the destruction tree after patch 4.0.3a will upgrade his direct damage spells to do as much damage as possible. The destruction spec requires purchasing every talent in the destruction tree except for "Improved Searing Pain" and "Improved Soul Fire." Additionally, the spec only requires one point in "Backlash," instead of the maximum of three points. The spec also should have "Dark Arts," "Fel Synergy" and "Mana Feed" from the demonology tree, as well as "Improved Life Tap" from the affliction tree. This spec leaves one additional point that you can spend wherever you like.

    4.0.3a Demonology Spec

    • If you choose the demonology spec for your warlock, you will focus on improving the amount of damage, and additional abilities, of your demonic minion. The best demonology spec will require everything in the demonology tree except for "Mana Feed" and "Master Summoner." The spec will also require "Bane," "Shadow and Flame," "Improved Immolate" and "Emberstorm" from the destruction tree.
