Whether you're a sports fanatic, looking for the perfect retro costume or simply putting together a Halloween look at the last minute, a tennis costume is easy to make and relies on elements you can find at most department stores or even your own home. So throw on some clothes, pick up a racket and have a swinging good time getting dressed up in a tennis costume.
For agility on the court, most tennis players discard flashy tops in favor of comfortable T-shirts and polo shirts. Capture the sophisticated yet sporty look of a tennis player by wearing a crisp white polo shirt. Polos with basic embellishments, such as red or black stripes down the arms or a logo on the pocket, will also look convincing as part of a tennis costume. If the store is out of short-sleeved polos, a simple crew neck T-shirt in a solid color will also work.
Show off some skin with the bottom half of a tennis player costume. For males or females, a pair of shorts makes a great accompaniment to the polo. While clean white shorts may go best, other basic solid colors, such as red or cobalt blue, provide a bottom that is not too distracting. Females may also prefer to wear a skirt. A pleated skirt is better suited for costumes inspired by female players from previous decades, while an athletic-looking skirt is better for a more contemporary tennis costume.
Hair and Makeup
Use the hairstyles and appearances of professional tennis players as inspiration for a tennis costume. A long poofy curly wig or hairstyle paired with a sour expression (and some cursing) helps the costume wearer look like a young John McEnroe. Alternatively, sport the thin braids often worn by the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus. For a more simple style, females can throw their hair into a ponytail to keep it out of their face.
Before heading out to the costume party, add some accessories to make a more convincing tennis player costume. Wrap a terry cloth sweat band around the wearer's forehead or shield her eyes with a visor. For footwear, rely on white tennis shoes paired with immaculately white socks. Of course, a tennis costume is not complete without a tennis racket and tennis ball.
