When you go to connect your Flip Video camera to your computer, Flip’s documentation states that you must first turn the camera off. After you’ve plugged its built-in USB arm into an available USB port, your computer and the camera will communicate with each other. Then, you’ll see the word “Connected” show up on your Flip Video’s display. Modern Windows and Mac computers will both automatically search for drivers once the computer detects your Flip Video camera. If this doesn’t happen, something is preventing your computer from recognizing your camera.
Your Flip Video camera depends on your computer to charge its battery, in addition to transferring video. If your computer isn’t even recognizing your Flip Video camera to add drivers, you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the problem yourself. However, in some cases, you may need to contact the customer support hot lines for either your Flip Video camera or your computer.

Use a High-Powered USB Port
All Flip Video cameras require you to use a high-powered USB port on your computer when you connect them. While your camera does have a battery, it requires additional power when you’re transferring data. Not all USB ports are powered, and some only have low power rather than high power -- such as the ports on Mac desktop keyboards. If your computer doesn’t have high-powered USB ports, you can purchase a powered USB hub to connect between your computer’s existing USB ports and your Flip Video camera. Note that you’ll need a free wall outlet to plug in your powered USB hub if you go this route.
Sometimes, firewall or antivirus software can interfere with your computer’s ability to detect your Flip Video camera or other devices. They can also prevent your computer from automatically searching for the right drivers for your newly attached hardware. You also need to be logged in as an administrator on your computer to successfully connect your camera. It’s also possible that the problem isn’t with your computer or its USB ports at all, but with your camera. To test whether this is the case, try connecting other USB devices, such as an MP3 player or digital camera to your computer. If they connect successfully, the problem is probably with your Flip Video camera. If they don’t connect successfully to one USB port, try another USB port on your computer.
