Use lighting techniques to create a dramatic effect.

The difference between a snapshot and a photographic art piece is often defined by the lighting technique the photographer employs. Low-light techniques can create a warm light and dramatic shadows. Soft- or low-light photos will evoke a strong emotional response by the viewer. Other lighting techniques include creating silhouettes and using candles and other light sources to produce a dramatic effect.

  1. Back Lighting

    • Back lighting, sometimes known as rim lighting, is when the prominent or only light source is behind the subject. Often the light is shining directly toward the camera from behind the subject. This produces a dramatic silhouette effect. The details on the subject are removed and only the basic shape can been seen. A silhouette picture is appropriate for a portrait and can be used to photograph items with a distinct shape. Adjust the back lighting technique to produce a dramatic glow around the rim of the subject that highlights the subject's contour.

    Side Lighting

    • Side lighting is a technique that produces long shadows. This technique can be used in portraits and other types of photography. This lighting technique is seen in nature. If you take an outdoor photograph at dusk, the sun is just about at the horizon and will produce long shadows. You can replicate this lighting technique in the studio by setting a light to the right or left of the subject and turning off the fill flash. The light source should be even with the subject to create this effect.

    Spot Lighting

    • A spotlight technique can be used to highlight a certain aspect of a person's face or a particular person or item in a group. Use a spotlight from above, below or from any angle. The light can highlight a very narrow area, such a person's lips in a portrait. You can also use a spotlight to bring drama to photograph by hanging the spotlight directly above the subject and allowing the shadow to be cast on the floor beneath.

    Other Dramatic Lighting Techniques

    • You can create a dramatic lighting effect by using candlelight to illuminate your subject. Candlelight will give a warm glow to the subject and cast long shadows. You can use a single candle that is directly in front of the subject or a few candles spaced evenly around the subject. Each technique creates a different dramatic look. Use a tripod when using low light to achieve a clean and crisp image. You may also want to try using a colored lens cover or gel to diffuse the light from a flash which will give a dramatic result.
