PrintMaster Tips for Business Cards

Your cards should reflect your industry or personality.

PrintMaster software offers people with no design background a simple way to create professional-looking documents, including business cards. At $35 in 2011, it's also affordable. PrintMaster 2012 Platinum Edition offers new design ideas, extra graphics choices and updated Avery business card template choices to help you create the ideal business card for your needs.

  1. Business Card Paper

    • Before you design your cards, purchase the paper to print them on. Whether it's the name-brand Avery paper or an off-brand, you'll likely see the Avery template number on the box. Enter this number into PrintMaster to start your business card to ensure your design fits perfectly. If you create the card first and then apply it to a business card template, the margins may not fit exactly.

    Art and Color

    • PrintMaster files are designed to be printed on your home printer, although you can export them to the Web or to a PDF to be printed professionally. If you're using your home printer, it's best to keep the amount of color to a minimum; if you want blue business cards, buy blue paper instead of making the background blue. Designing a blue background will eat up your printer ink quickly. When choosing art for the business card using PrintMaster's "Select Art and Photos" menu item, look for clip art that isn't fully colored to save your printer ink.

    Check Project

    • Use the "Check Project" feature often during your business card design. This feature shows you a preview of your finished product without distracting text boxes, and it checks your spelling. It also looks for design errors, such as art or text that overlaps a margin. This feature doesn't save your work, so be sure to save often.

    Align

    • Enhance the professional appearance of your business cards by lining up your graphics and text. You may choose to align them in the center or to one side. Using the Align feature takes the guesswork out of making sure the design offers clean edges or is perfectly centered. Press "Shift" and click on each item to be aligned. Right-click and choose "Align." Choose to align to the left, right or center.
