iPod Shuffles do not have a screen to display the song title or artist.

You can add audiobook files developed by Audible to iTunes and play them on an iPod. These files have the extension ".aa," and are transferred to an iPod just like other files -- via a sync. If your iPod Shuffle is having problems with AA files, the issue is likely due to old software or an incompatible file format.

  1. Software Version

    • An iPod Shuffle must have software version 1.2 or later in order to successfully play an AA file. If your iPod software is outdated, connect it to iTunes to fix the problem. Once your iPod Shuffle is recognized by iTunes, click on the iPod in the iTunes source list and go to the "Settings" tab. Click the "Check for Update" button to initiate a scan of your iPod to detect its current software. After agreeing to the update, the new software downloads to your device.

    Audible Format

    • Audible files are available in four formats: 1, 2, 3 and 4. While formats 2, 3 and 4 can be played on an iPod Shuffle, format 1 is not compatible with iPod Shuffle devices. If an AA file does not play on your iPod, check the format of the file by right-clicking on it in iTunes and choosing "Get Info." The file's format is listed on the "Summary" tab, in the "Kind" field.

    Maximum Computers

    • Each purchased AA file can be played on a maximum of three computers. If you add the file to a fourth computer, the file will not play and may not successfully transfer to an iPod. By clicking on the "Store" tab in the iTunes toolbar on one of your authorized computers and choosing "Deauthorize," you can free up permission to add one more computer to your authorized list.

    Bad Files

    • Sometimes an iPod does not play a file simply because the file has a glitch or problem. This issue is especially likely if you downloaded the file from a third-party shareware source; in other words, the file was not purchased legally from Audible. Try playing the files in iTunes, and if the file also does not play there, purchase the AA file from Audible or iTunes.
