Add a Google Map to a WordPress website with Store Locator LE.

WordPress Store Locator LE and Store Locator Plus are two plugins that add map interactivity to a WordPress website. The plugins combine a search form and an interactive Google map to put on a WordPress website, to show the location of the WordPress user's place of business. Tags aid in identifying the place of business.

  1. Installing the Plugin

    • Add the Store Locator LE or Store Locator Plus plugin to the WordPress site. Go to the Web host location and upload the Store Locator plugin zip file to the "/wp-contents/plugin" directory. Click "Extract" to extract the file. Then go to the WordPress Dashboard and click "Plugins" to see the full list. Click "Activate" under Store Locator to activate the plugin. The plugin must work with the Google Maps API key, so retrieve one after signing up from the Google Maps API website. Then click "Add Locations" in the Store Locator admin panel in the WordPress Dashboard. Add the code "[STORE-LOCATOR]" on any WordPress post or page to display the Google Map.

    Map Tags

    • Tags are words or short phrases similar to keywords that describe the WordPress user's place of business on the Store Locator map. Tags should include a mixture of general words, such as "retail," and specific words, like "Ladies T-shirts," to give the most information to WordPress website visitors. The Store Locator map can include multiple locations, so separating each location by using tags is helpful. Map tags are used for both information and organizational purposes.

    Adding Tags

    • To add tags to Store Locator, go to the WordPress Dashboard. Click on "Store Locator" to bring up the admin panel. Click "Add Location" to add a new location to the Google Map. Type the address. Under Additional Information is the Tags box. Type the descriptive tags for the location. Separate each tag with a comma. Click the blue "Add Location" button to save the information and add it to the Google Map.

    Managing Tags

    • Tags can also be managed through a custom search in the Store Locator plugin. To access it, go to the WordPress Dashboard. Click "Store Locator" and "Manage Locations." Under Map Settings, in the Search Settings section, check the box next to "Tag Input" to only allow the map user to search maps using restricted tags. Or check the box next to "Show any on tag pulldowns" to display all of the tags associated with each added map.
