Internet Explorer 8 Keeps Closing After Starting
Microsoft has identified a flaw within Internet Explorer 8 that causes the browser to start, flash and then immediately close. If Internet Explorer 8 is the only browser you use, you could temporarily lose access to the Internet. Microsoft has found three ways to solve the problem.
-
Software Corruption
-
According to the Microsoft website, when Internet Explorer 8 opens, flashes on your screen and abruptly closes, your version of the browser has become corrupted. When a program becomes corrupted, it loses the ability to function properly. A crucial application file might be missing or invalid.
Reset Internet Explorer 8
-
The first solution recommended by Microsoft is to perform an application reset. Even if you cannot open Internet Explorer 8, you can reset the program within Windows itself. Windows computers contain a Control Panel, where, among other options, you are allowed to configure IE8. One of the options in the settings is the "Reset" button. After you click "Reset," the program will revert to its default setting.
-
Uninstall and Re-Install IE8
-
Although a program reset should solve the startup problem, resetting the program will not always do the trick. If you reset the program and the browser continues to malfunction, the next recommended solution is to remove and re-install the program. The program can be removed in the Control Panel. Additionally, the program can be re-installed in the Control Panel itself, as Internet Explorer is a core Windows feature. As a result, you do not need to access the Microsoft website to download the program.
Internet Explorer Troubleshooters
-
Windows 7 includes two Internet Explorer Troubleshooters: "Internet Explorer Performance" and "Internet Explorer Safety." Microsoft recommends running the "Internet Explorer Performance" troubleshooter, which will identify and repair issues with the browser. Perform the "Internet Explorer Safety" troubleshooter if the "Performance" troubleshooter also fails to fix the problem.
