Why Do I Get Internet Explorer Script Messages Constantly?

Microsoft released Internet Explorer 9 in 2011.

Many complex websites use various forms of scripting, such as JavaScript or VBScript, to enhance their appearance. If the site's creator left an error in the scripting, it can prevent the site from displaying correctly or cause errors. To assist troubleshooting, Internet Explorer displays script error messages when a website's scripts contain mistakes. Home users, however, may safely disable these script errors as long as other functions work correctly.

  1. Disabling Script Errors

    • To disable script debugging, open Internet Explorer. Press the "Tools" button and click "Internet Options." Switch to the "Advanced" tab. Check the boxes marked "Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)" and "Disable script debugging (Other)." Remove the check from the "Display a notification about every script error" box, if marked. Press "Ok" to save. This will prevent script error messages from appearing. However, this will make it more difficult to debug scripts on websites you run and will also block error messages better solved through Internet Explorer troubleshooting.

    When to Disable

    • Most script errors result from minor inconsistencies in a website's coding. These error messages pop up to help the site's authors fix their problems, but serve no purpose to home users. If you see script errors, but your Web browser works fine, simply disable the messages. If the error messages coincide with websites functioning improperly, however, other troubleshooting steps may solve both issues. Try visiting the site on a different Web browser or computer. If the issue still occurs, the problem is most likely the fault of the site. If not, Internet Explorer requires troubleshooting

    Troubleshooting Internet Explorer

    • For script errors that only occur on one computer and only with Internet Explorer, check the browser's security settings. Press "Tools" and click "Internet Options." Click the Security tab and press "Default Level" to reset the security allowances to allow scripts. Heightened security levels block some scripts, causing script errors. Return to the General tab and press "Delete" under Browsing History. Check the "Temporary Internet files" box and click "Delete." Removing cached files forces the browser to reload all websites, potentially fixing an error stuck in memory.

    Errors Outside Browsing

    • Internet Explorer script errors sometimes occur when you are not running Internet Explorer, because local programs sometimes use the browser's engine to run scripts. Disabling the error notifications will prevent these messages, as well. Before doing so, ensure that the scripts originate from known sources. Frequent script errors outside of browsing might point to a virus or malware. If script errors occur, and the source information points to an unknown program, run a virus scan first before simply disabling the notifications.
