Connect your MacBook to your TV to watch online programming on the big screen.

Connecting your MacBook to your HDMI-compatible TV lets you take advantage of watching television programs online. With the correct adapter, for example, you can watch your shows from Netflix or Hulu on your TV or share photo slide shows from iPhoto without crowding the family around your laptop.

  1. MacBook Models

    • If your MacBook is the mid-2010 model or later, you can connect it to a display using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, which converts the MacBook's display signal into one a TV can use. The MacBook provides up to eight channels of multichannel audio signal and video signal output from the Mini DisplayPort.

    Recommended Adapters

    • Apple recommends that all Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters conform to the Video Electronics Standards Association 1.1a DisplayPort Interoperability Guidelines. Apple doesn't manufacture these adapters but recommends either the Moshi Mini DP to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support or the Griffin Video Display Converter. Other third-party adapters may work if they conform to the VESA guidelines. Using non-compliant adapters may result in problems with the audio feed between the computer and the HDMI device.

    Display Settings

    • Once you connect the display to your MacBook, click the "System Preferences" option under the Apple menu in the left-hand corner of your screen. From there, click on the "Displays" icon. Inside the HDMI Display window, click on the "Detect Displays" button. This will automatically scan your HDMI Display and select the appropriate resolution. If you don't like the resolution selected, you can override it by selecting your own resolution from the list. Click on the "Color" tab to edit the color profile, if needed.

    Audio Problems

    • If you find that you aren't receiving the proper audio signal between your laptop and your TV, you may need to add a separate audio cable. Apple sells a Belkin Y Adapter, but any audio adapter with a 3.5 mm plug on one end and two RCA plugs on the other will work. Plug the 3.5 mm plug into the earphone jack of your MacBook and the red and white RCA plugs into the red and white audio ports on your TV.
