Application That Allows Users to Type on Adobe Reader
Adobe Reader is an application that lets you open and manipulate PDF files. The application has native support for PDF annotation, but it’s not the only application with this capability. A number of developers have created alternative PDF typing and annotation applications for devices ranging from desktop computers to smartphones.

Foxit Reader is a streamlined, full-featured application that lets you open, print and edit PDF files created by Adobe Acrobat and other PDF writers. Features include document annotation, the ability to fill out PDF forms, social network integration, text-to-voice functionality and full typing capabilities. Foxit is compatible with computers running Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. Computers also require at least a 1.3-GHz processor, 52 MB of free hard drive space, 64 MB of RAM and a screen capable of at least an 800-by-600-pixel display resolution.

PDF-Notes Free is an application for Apple’s iPad that lets you type on top of PDF documents. Its features include annotation support, finger writing with a variety of highlighters and pens, landscape and portrait orientation capabilities, annotated PDF export functionality, multi-touch support and a powerful in-app search tool. PDF-Notes Free is free to download, 35.9 MB in size, and requires an iPad running iOS 4.2 or later. Unlike some iPad apps, it is not compatible with Apple’s iPhone or iPod touch.

Skim is a free application that lets you read, edit and save PDF files on computers running Apple’s Macintosh OS X operating system. Features include robust PDF annotation, underline support, text highlighting, editable and movable on-screen sticky notes, zoom shortcuts and a robust search tool. Skim is only natively compatible with Max OS X versions prior to OS X 10.5.

RepliGo Reader lets you view and annotate PDF files on smartphones and tablet computers running the Google Android operating system. Its PDF typing features include sticky notes, highlighting, text boxes, freehand drawings, cross-outs and underlines. You can also customize the border thickness and color of notes, add in-text bookmarks and document links, and zoom in and out on PDF documents. RepliGo Reader has trackball and keyboard support and lets you send annotated documents via email and file-sharing applications like Evernote and Dropbox. RepliGo Reader is a 1.3 MB download that costs around $5 and requires Android 2.0 or higher.
