The communication software ooVoo allows users to initiate a video call or chat using a computer or another type of mobile device. ooVoo is a free service for many functions including video calling and video chats from a computer. However, if you want to use ooVoo on a mobile device or purchase advanced options for use on your computer, the company applies a subscription fee.
OoVoo works on both Mac and PC computers, Apple devices such as the iPhone running the iOS operating system, and Android devices. In order to use ooVoo on any device, you must have a stable Internet connection including Wi-Fi or a 3G or 4G cellular data connection. Additionally, you will need either a built-in or external webcam, microphone and speakers to access ooVoo’s video functions.
Spyware and Other Dangers
OoVoo software does not contain spyware, banner ads, programs that can redirect you to other websites, or any other potentially malicious software. In addition, the ooVoo website offers encryption and is free of potential threats. It is possible, however, to receive a warning from the McAfee Advisor that ooVoo’s website is suspicious or potentially dangerous.
Why the McAfee Warning?
According to ooVoo, the McAfee warning results from previous complaints about potential spyware that users made concerning a specific aspect within the ooVoo program, a toolbar that allows easy access to certain functions including a Yahoo search bar. While these complaints relate to a previous version of the ooVoo application, you still may receive the McAfee warning even if you are using the latest version of the ooVoo software. According to ooVoo, these complaints are and always were unfounded, and that the ooVoo website and application remain completely safe to use.
