What Does a Pinned Conversation Mean on Skype?
Skype keeps all of your old conversations indefinitely. This can make it difficult to find a specific conversation later. If you remember a particular word from the conversation, you can search for it. This, of course, brings up every conversation with that contact in which that word came up, but should eventually steer you to the right chat. Linux users, however, have a simpler alternative for memorable conversations.

In Linux, you can bookmark a text conversation. Once known as "pinning" it, bookmarking a conversation saves it and makes it easy to access for later reference. To pin a conversation, open a chat window with the contact in question. You'll see a book-shaped icon accompanied by the word "Bookmark" near the upper right corner of the chat window. Click this icon to bookmark your chat. Click the Skype icon and then "Bookmarked Chats" later when you wish to view this chat again.

Because pinning is an option only on Linux, Mac and Windows users need a different solution to save an important chat for easy later reference. A simple solution is to copy and paste the entire chat to another location. If you would rather only save your important chat in Skype, try including a code word or phrase to help you find it again later. For example, you could type "raspberry lemonade" at the end of any conversations that you know you will want to reference later. Because this is likely not a phrase you will use often, searching for it in your Skype history will only turn up your important chats.

Solutions for Voice or Video Conversations

Saving a voice or video chat on Skype for future reference requires a different strategy. Skype itself offers no way to record or preserve these calls; you can't simply press a "Record" button during the conversation. Instead, use one of a variety of apps designed for this purpose. Skype's shop offers several, including "Call Recorder for Mac," "Pamela for Skype - Business Edition" and "VodBurner Video Call Recorder," among others.

Skype saves all of your text chats with all of your contacts indefinitely. This is helpful if you don't copy and paste your important conversations to other locations. If you do, however, you may find that sorting through years of past chats is annoying rather than helpful. You can get rid of your entire chat history if you wish. Alternatively, or additionally, you can update Skype's settings to save your chat history for only a specific length of time, such as a week or a month.
