What Is an Optonline SMTP Server?
Cablevision provides Optimum Online Internet access. It offers Optonline Web-based email as part of its Internet services. Users may also use an email program like Microsoft Outlook to view and send Optonline email. Use of an email reader requires assignment of POP and SMTP servers. Optonline email users should learn how to assign the Optonline SMTP server to utilize Cablevision's email services.

SMTP Basics
-
SMTP stands for "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol." It is a system for sending email to and from various servers. When a person sends an email message, it typically travels through various servers. For example, if using Optonline email to send to a Gmail user, the message must go through at least an Optonline server and a server used by Google for Gmail. With Web-based Optonline email, you do not need to know anything about SMTP. When using an email program like Outlook to send and receive Optonline email, you only need to know how to set up the program with the proper SMTP server information.
Email Readers
-
Some people prefer to use an email reader like Outlook instead of logging in at a website to read and send email. However, an email reader needs to know two main kinds of information to send and receive email. The first is a special SMTP server name. The second is a POP or IMAP name. While SMTP sends email across servers, you need a POP or IMAP address to access your messages. Optonline email users must assign specified SMTP and POP3 email server names to use an email reader.

Optonline Server Names
-
If you have Cablevision's Optimum Online Internet access, your email address will be either an Optonline or Optimum address. An example is "yourname@optonline.net." For Optonline use with an external email program, the SMTP server name you must assign is "mail.optonline.net." You must also assign the POP3 name of "mail.optonline.net" when configuring your Optonline SMTP. Similarly, an Optimum email address uses "mail.optimum.net" as the SMTP and POP3 server names.
Setting Up Optonline Servers
-
The email program you use will dictate exactly how to set up your Optonline POP3 and SMTP servers. When setting up your account, the email program will ask for POP and SMTP server names. For Optonline, you will enter the "mail.optonline.net" server name for both POP and SMTP. For example, when using Outlook Express for Windows, you click on "Tools" and "Account." You then select "New" and "Mail" to enter your email address, Optonline server names and related information. Other email clients use a similar account creation process.
