What Is a Skype vCard?

Ever since the release of Skype 5.0, the Skype application stores your contact information on a server. Even with the introduction of this cloud-based contact storage, however, the Skype application retained the ability to save files in vCard format. Skype vCards are very similar to regular vCards, so to understand them, you must first understand what a regular vCard is.

  1. What Are vCards?

    • "VCard" is short for "virtual business card." A vCard file stores your contact information and allows you to share this information with others digitally. Users can then import this vCard data into an application that supports vCards so that they always have access to your contact information. VCards can contain everything from your home address and telephone number, to your email address and website, but only the information that you include appears on your vCard.

    Skype vCard Information

    • A Skype contact's vCard only contains information that is relevant to the Skype application. This includes the user's Skype username, mobile number, home number, office number, website, birthday, city, state and country.

    Saving Skype vCards

    • You can save your Skype contacts to a file directly within the Skype application. Launch the Skype application and click the "Contacts" menu. Move your mouse cursor over the "Advanced" option and select the "Backup Contacts to File ..." option. Type a name for the file in the space provided and click the "Save" button to save the file.

    Sending Skype Contacts

    • In addition to saving your contacts, you can also send contacts to other Skype users directly within the Skype application. Launch the Skype application and click on the user that you want to send the contact information to. Click the "+" icon and select the "Send Contacts ... " option. Select the contacts that you want to send and click the "Send" button to send the contacts. The other user must then save the contacts as a vCard to view them outside of the Skype application.
