Cut small strips in fleece scarves to make fringe.

Make fun fleece scarf projects for kids with a few simple supplies and lots of adult supervision. Consider the size of the child who will wear the scarf before determining how much fleece to buy. Experiment with patterned fabric for holidays or costumes. Always keep little hands safe from sharp fabric scissors, needles and pins.

  1. Homemade Scarf with Fringe

    • Cut three different colors of fleece into strips 4 feet long and 4 inches wide. Use shorter strips for a small child. For a Halloween scarf, combine orange, white and black. For a Christmas scarf, choose green, red and white. Layer the three strips of cut fleece in a parallel stack. Sew a straight line lengthwise down the middle of the stack. Make cuts 1-inch apart down the length of each side of the stack, cutting to a half inch before the middle seam. Part and fluff the fringe. The scarf is ready to wear.

    Applique

    • Applique cut-outs to a homemade fleece scarf for a child. Select a theme. For example, to create a night sky scene, cut two moon and eight star shapes from yellow fleece scraps. Sew the cut shapes onto the same side of a hemmed, navy blue strip of fleece, about 60 inches long and 7 inches wide. Attach one moon and four stars near each end.

    Pockets

    • Give a child a fun place to store her mittens by sewing pockets into a ready-made fleece scarf. Use a long, wide scarf to accommodate the size of pockets desired. Create a large, square pocket by folding up one end of the scarf. Close and secure both sides with fabric pins. Stitch each side with a darning needle and yarn, then remove the pins. For two smaller pockets, stitch another seam down the middle of the original pocket.

    Trimmings

    • Add trimmings and embellishments to fleece scarves for kids. For example, sew flower- and butterfly-shaped buttons to a scarf with a garden theme. Use fabric glue to attach red, white and blue ribbons to a scarf for a child learning about American history. Stitch strips of lace to scarf hems for extra feminine flair. Handle fleece scarves with attached trimmings with care. In most cases, hand wash and air dry them to keep them in great shape.
