Problems Logging into AOL Mail

The process for logging in to your AOL mail account should take just a few seconds if it goes as designed. Unfortunately, sometimes a forgotten password or computer problem will prohibit your ability to access your account. If you find yourself unable to get to your email inbox, the most likely problem is that your computer is blocking access. Always check the screen for a specific error message from AOL, which might tell you why you are unable to log in, such as a technical difficulty affecting all users.

  1. Resetting Password

    • If you do not access your AOL email in quite a while, you might forget your password. Fortunately, AOL makes it easy to create a new password to something you are more likely to remember. Just click the "Forgot password?" link immediately beneath the Password field and answer your security questions to create a new password. After you access your account enough times from the same computer, AOL will offer you Automatic Password Recovery, which lets you reset a password without security questions

    Clearing Browser Data

    • Sometimes a problem with your Internet files will cause a log-in glitch on AOL. To rule this out as the issue with your log in, use your browser's Internet options menu -- or history menu in Firefox -- to get your browser to delete its recent history. AOL recommends clearing your cache, cookies and history of recently visited websites. Refresh your AOL window after you delete the history before you attempt to log in again.

    Allowing AOL to Operate

    • Anti-virus programs protect your computer from malicious content that can put your personal information at risk. They can also, however, prevent some programs to open properly. If you have an anti-virus program running, make sure that AOL is on the safe list of Web addresses. Similarly, your computer has an internal firewall that may be hindering AOL; put aol.com and mail.aol.com on your firewall's safe list. AOL also recommends restoring your browser's security settings to the default level.

    Using Different Browser

    • If you experience trouble logging in to AOL in a particular Internet browser, such as Internet Explorer, try using a different Web browser to log in. It may also be helpful to log in on another computer altogether, so that you can determine if the problem is with your computer or rather with your AOL account itself. If you are unable to log in on multiple computers, contact AOL customer service to seek assistance with your account.
