Will Skype Work on Google Voice?
Skype and Google Voice are both chat applications that allow you to make voice and video calls to other phones and computers, with Skype being a downloadable application and Google Voice a Web-based interface. It isn't possible to use Skype and Google Voice in conjunction with one another, although you can use both programs to call contacts from the other.

Skype and Google Voice are similar in function, although several differences exist between the two programs, none of which make either one absolutely advantageous over the other. While Skype is a stand-alone program you download to your computer, Google Voice is entirely Web-based, permitting voice and video calls from within the Gmail interface. As of October 2011, Google Voice allows for free domestic phone calls, while Skype charges for all calls you make that aren't to free 1-800 numbers.

One way to integrate Google Voice with Skype is to import your Google contacts into your Skype buddy list. To get started, click "Import Contacts" from the "Contacts" drop-down menu, and then click the "Gmail" tab. Input your Gmail username and password -- Skype neither stores nor sells this login information -- and then click "Import" to bring up a list of Google contacts that also use Skype. Skype now gives you the option of adding as many Google contacts as you choose to your Skype buddy list.

Although you can also call phones using Skype, the program's primary function is to connect you with other Skype users via Skype usernames. As a result, it isn't possible to import Skype contacts into Google Skype as you would import Gmail contacts into Skype. It is, however, possible to obtain any Skype buddy's phone number and call him from Google Voice, particularly if he lives within the U.S., since the phone call is free.

Google Voice is integrated with not only Gmail but also Google Chat, permitting you to engage in text-based conversations with contacts as you would using Skype as well as picture, video and file sharing. To communicate with someone via Google Chat you need her email address, so obtain the email address of any Skype user you wish to contact via Google Chat, and then paste it into the Add box on the left side of Gmail and click "Invite To Chat."
