How Does Text Messaging Work on Google Voice?
Google Voice lets you manage your phone using one free number. You can send and receive text messages through the system, which can help reduce your monthly text-messaging fee through your mobile service provider and allow you to send text messages through a web-based interface. As of October 2011, Google Voice only allows text-messaging services for people in the United States and Canada.

Sending Text Messages
-
Log into your Google Voice account to send a text message. After you log in, click the red button that reads “Text,” which appears on the left side of the screen, directly above the “Inbox” label. Use the “To” field to type the phone numbers of the individuals you want to send a text message. You can send a text message to up to five people at one time. Use a comma to separate each phone number. Enter your text message in the “Message” field. You can use up to 160 characters.
Cost of Text Messaging
-
As of October 2011, it is free to send and receive text messages through Google Voice. You can take advantage of Google Voice’s text-messaging system by signing up for an account on the website.

Texting Limits
-
In an effort to prevent abuse, Google Voice can limit the number of text messages you send, or the number of recipients you send your text messages to. If you have sent too many messages, during a given period of time, or attempt to send messages to too many recipients at one time, you may receive a message that asks you to send your text message to a smaller group of people, or to send your message at a later time.
Receiving Text Messages
-
You can receive text messages, if you provide your friends, family and business associates with your Google Voice phone number. When you sign up for an account, you get an opportunity to pick a phone number. When you log into your Google Voice account, your phone number appears on the left under the label “Your Number.” When you receive text messages, they will show up in your Google Voice mailbox.
Text-to-Email
-
You can get your Google Voice text messages sent to the Gmail address associated with your Google Voice account, so that you can check your incoming communications in one place. Enable this by clicking the gear image, which appears at the top of your Google Voice inbox. Select “Settings,” then select “Voicemail & Text.” Select the “Text Forwarding” box to select the text-to-email option.
Text-to-Mobile
-
If you have a mobile phone, you can get your Google Voice text messages sent to your mobile device via text message. To do this, log into your Google Voice account, click the “gear” image, then select “Settings.” Add your phone number to the “Forward call to” section and select “mobile” as your “Phone Type.”
