Styles for Thunderbird
You can totally customize Thunderbird's theme, and you don't even need any technical known-how. Mozilla offers a handy list of hundreds of different themes that are easy to install in any version of Thunderbird. Some themes are designed simply to look pretty, others to imitate the look of other programs and others still help increase the functionality of your email client.

Finding and Downloading
-
Themes for Thunderbird are available on the Mozilla website as add-ons for Thunderbird. The Mozilla website is your best and safest bet for themes because even though the themes are user-submitted, Mozilla has some quality control. Themes comes as ".jar" or ".xpi" files, and you can use any compatible ".jar" or ".xpi" theme from anywhere on the Internet, not just ones from the Mozilla website. When you find a theme you like, click the "Download" button to save the theme file to your computer. Some themes have a "Contribute" button as well, which allows you to donate to the theme developer. If you get use from the theme, consider contributing, but it's by no means necessary to download the file.
Installing
-
When your theme file download is complete, start Thunderbird and open the Add-Ons window from the Tools menu. Click the "Install" button and select the downloaded theme file. If your theme uses an ".xpi" file and you don't see it when you open the directory where the file is saved, click "All Files" from the File Type drop-down menu. You'll need to confirm the installation and restart Thunderbird when prompted. The theme will be used as default when Thunderbird starts again.

Managing and Uninstalling
-
You can install multiple themes for Thunderbird and keep them stored within Thunderbird. When you install a new theme, the old one is disabled but not uninstalled. You can manage your installed themes by opening the Add-Ons window and clicking the "Themes" button. There you'll have a list of all your currently installed themes. Switch to a different theme by selecting it and clicking the "Use Theme" button. To remove a theme from your computer, click the "Uninstall" button. You can always download and reinstall the theme again at a later date if you change your mind.
Problems
-
Because themes are user-designed, you're more likely to encounter small bugs. Typically these are fixed with updates pretty quickly. While you shouldn't run into any issues with compatibility -- as Thunderbird is a multi-platform program -- you may find that a theme that works on a large resolution is too bulky in a small resolution. Also, themes may break when Thunderbird gets an upgrade.
