Why Is It Taking So Long to Sign In to Skype?
Chat messenger Skype requires the Internet to function, so signing into the program is mandatory if you wish to chat with other Skype users via voice, video or text, or to call or send SMS text messages to phones. If you experience a long sign-in time, any of several factors may be behind such delays.
-
Authentication Problems
-
If Skype is slow to sign in, your login credentials may be incorrect. When you sign in, Skype attempts to authenticate your login credentials and, if successful, loads the messenger interface on your computer. If not, it may make multiple attempts to log in — hence the delayed login time — before eventually giving you an error message. Make sure your login credentials are valid before attempting to login again.
Software Version
-
As is the case with other software programs, Skype suggests you upgrade to the latest version of the software for optimal performance. Delays or failure to sign into Skype may be due to an older software version that is no longer compatible with your computer's operating system. Visit Skype's website to download a free update of Skype.

Computer Malfunction
-
A malfunction with the computer itself may prevent you from signing in to Skype. If the computer "freezes," for example, you may be using too much of the computer's CPU or memory to run Skype. A minimum processor speed of 1GHz and available RAM of 256MB is recommended to operate Skype, so if you use less than this, or if you use only slightly more but are running several applications, close out of the applications you aren't using to free up system resources.
Faulty Internet Connection
-
Skype requires an Internet connection to complete sign-in, so a problem may indicate that your Internet connection malfunctioned. To test whether the Internet connection works, open a page in the computer's Internet browser. If it doesn't load, you know a faulty Internet connection has prevented you from signing in to Skype.
