Why Does My Monitor Blink?

Blinking on a computer monitor can be caused by a number of reasons. Worse case scenario is the backlight is dying, which generally means the monitor is about to stop turning on entirely. In most cases, backlights cannot be replaced, meaning a replacement monitor may be required. Blinking can also be caused by less severe circumstances, such as loose cables.

  1. Backlight Failure

    • All monitor backlights have lifespans of varying lengths. Constant blinking can be the result of a backlight going out. Blinking can also be the result of the refresh rate not be configured for the monitor properly. To change the refresh rate, right-click the desktop, click "Screen Resolution" and click "Advance Settings." Select the refresh rate as recommended by the monitor's specifications.

    Graphics Card Problem

    • To ensure the graphics card is not the problem, download the latest drivers from the manufacturer's website. If you're using onboard video, check the motherboard manufacturer's website to download the latest drivers. If updated drivers do not resolve the problem, verify the graphics card is properly inserted.

    Power Supply

    • All computer monitors include a power supply used to power the monitor. It is not uncommon for the power supply to malfunction. Although it may be possible to replace the power supply yourself, this is not usually feasible as it requires advanced technical knowledge and most likely voids the warranty on the monitor.

    Physical Connection

    • Check to confirm the power supply and video cables are fully inserted into their proper ports. If possible, test the monitor using the out-of-the-box power supply cable and video cable with a different computer. If the problem persist, try connecting a different power supply cable and video cable.
