AbiWord is a word processing program that works in a similar manner to Microsoft Word in many ways. One way that it differs is that AbiWord is free; if your new computer does not come with word processing software than AbiWord may be an affordable option. New documents in AbiWord open with a pre-set template, however, you make basic edits to fit your particular word processing needs.

The menu bar in AbiWord, which sits at the top of the document and toolbars, is where you choose commands and find pull down menus. The menu bar is comparable to numerous other programs that you would find on a computer, including word processing, spreadsheets and Internet windows. You can also make words or sentences bold, italicized or underlined. Additionally, repositioning the justification to left, center or right is accomplished through the formatting toolbar as well.

Peruse the extra toolbar to insert bookmarks or links. This is beneficial if you are working with a lengthy document and need to set anchors in particular parts for easy reference. The extra toolbar is also used to change the paragraph spacing, alter the header and footers and allow for page numbering.

Though AbiWord is not as sophisticated as a program like Microsoft Word, there are some effects that it includes. The program does allow you to custom set tabs and alter the view in several different ways, such as normal, web or print layout. Plus, AbiWord comes with both vertical and horizontal scroll bars.
