Many profitable freelance blogging jobs aren't advertised.

Good writers can make money as freelance bloggers, and some turn blogging into full-time ventures. How much you make partly depends on how much time you're willing to commit to blogging and the methods you use for finding freelance work. You also need to consider what you have to offer that will help you stand out among the sea of writers and blogs that already exist.

  1. Finding Work

    • In a 2011 post on Problogger.net, writing coach Ali Hale estimates that freelance bloggers can earn about $40 to $60 for a typical blog post. You can contact the editors of company blogs to find work, or answer online ads seeking bloggers. Problogger.net and Bloggingpro.com are among numerous sites that post freelance blogging jobs. However, Hale indicates that many of the higher-paying jobs for freelance bloggers aren't advertised, so you may find more opportunities by contacting editors and blog owners directly to ask about available work.

    Networking

    • Consider using Facebook and other social networking sites to get the attention of blog editors and owners by commenting on a recent post you saw on their blog. However, it's important to be genuine when using this method to bolster your freelance blogging career by commenting on things that truly interest you or by providing additional information on topics you know well. Hale indicates that his first blogging jobs came through sending in guest posts to blogs. Nonetheless, Hale warns that any guest posts you send need to be pertinent and well written if you expect to grab the attention of an editor who might offer you a paid blogging assignment.

    Skills

    • Companies that hire bloggers often expect them to know a lot about social networking sites, where many blogs are discussed and promoted. Therefore, a company that hires you as a blogger may also require you to monitor and participate in several social networks. Freelance bloggers usually need to come up with their own topics that are relevant to blog subscribers, so it’s important to keep up with trends associated with a blog's theme to get freelance assignments from editors or blog owners.

    Starting a Blog

    • You could get freelance blogging assignments by starting your own blog. The Marie Claire magazine website profiled several successful bloggers in a 2011 article, including Poppy Dinsey who started the What Poppy Wore blog to highlight the outfits she wore each day. The blog gets more than 250,000 hits per month, and she earns $90,000 a year from her blog, according to Marie Claire. Still, Dinsey indicates in her interview with the magazine that the highlight of her career was when she was Vodafone's official blogger for London Fashion Week in 2010.
