My iTunes Unexpectedly Quit

iTunes has separate downloads for Mac and PC.

As frustrating as an iTunes sudden quit can be, the good news is that is won't negatively affect your library files. iTunes issues can stem from something as large as a system-wide problem with your computer, or as small as a corrupt song file. Before you reinstall iTunes altogether, evaluate where the issue is coming from, because you may not need to delete the program altogether.

  1. User Specific Causes

    • Sometimes plug-ins or preference files that are specific just to your iTunes program are the cause of an unexpected quit. Apple warns that third-party plug-ins are likely to be the source of issues, particularly if they have not been updated to accommodate the latest version of iTunes. Removing plug-ins from your computer will resolve the issues they cause. There are also two separate folders for your iTunes preference files, located on your computer "C" drive. Moving the folders to your desktop one at a time and reopening iTunes will let you know which, if either, folder needs to be deleted. If a particular song file always causes iTunes to quit, remove the file from your library.

    System Problems

    • A larger problem with your computer might be the reason iTunes quits. Apple recommends running your anti-virus software if iTunes experiences unexpected freezing or shuts down. If you do find a virus, be sure to quarantine and eliminate it using your anti-virus. On the other hand, sometimes aggressive anti-virus programs can cause iTunes to experience issues as well. Always make sure that iTunes is allowed through any firewalls or security software on your computer. Out of date drivers, such as a USB drive, on a PC can also cause iTunes to quit. Contact the manufacturer of your computer to find out how to update the drivers.

    Reinstalling iTunes

    • An improper installation of the iTunes program is apt to cause the window to quit suddenly. Because iTunes is free, uninstalling the program and downloading it again won't cost you anything. To get rid of your current iTunes installation, go to the "Control Panel" on your computer and choose "Uninstall/Remove." Highlight iTunes in the list of programs and choose "Uninstall." A new copy of iTunes can be found on the Apple website. As your song files are stored on your hard drive, removing and reinstalling iTunes won't result in a loss of files.

    Devices

    • If iTunes quits when you have a device attached for restore, like an iPod, try reconnecting the device in recovery mode. To enter recovery mode, power down your iPod and reconnect it to your computer while holding down the "Home" button. Reopen iTunes and try the restore again. If iTunes quits while your device is not attempting to restore, it is still a good idea to safely remove the device from your computer and reattach it to see if the issue persists or is resolved.
