Tips on Financial Aid Petition for Reinstatement
If you've had your financial aid suspended, it's likely because your grades slipped and you're not making satisfactory progress. If your grades have plummeted or you've had to briefly withdraw from school due to personal hardship, your petition for reinstatement should succinctly explain what led to your current situation, while assuring the financial aid committee that you're going to excel in the future.
-
Overview
-
Financial aid can be suspended for a few reasons; however, it's primarily suspended or halted when a student is deemed an academic risk. Students who receive financial aid are expected to take a minimum amount of credits and to maintain a minimum grade point average. When a student doesn't meet these expectations, financial aid can be suspended and there's a possibility it won't be reinstated, unless the student successfully petitions his college's financial aid committee.
Explain Your Situation
-
When writing your petition for reinstatement, the committee will want to know what led to the suspension. If you experienced a personal hardship, such as the death of a family member or a divorce, you need to include that in your petition. Explain how it affected you, without going in to too much detail. Simply state what happened and tell the reader that it was too difficult for you to focus on school. It's also important to tell the reader that you require financial aid to complete your studies.

Describe Your Dedication
-
Your audience will want to see that you plan on returning to school as a dedicated student. Explain how your situation will be different and stable, and that you fully intend to be a dilligent student upon your return. You should also explain how much your education means to you, and what your goals are. Include a discussion of your future plans and how your goals can't be met without completion of your coursework.
Step Away
-
After you've written your petition, step away from it for a few days. When you pick it back up to review it, you'll be looking at it with a fresh pair of eyes. Additionally, you should have a good friend or family member read it, as someone close to you can tell you if it adequately reflects your circumstances. Lastly, if you can provide supporting documents, such as a letter from a doctor if your hardship was due to a medical problem, gather such documents and file them with your petition.
