Use YouTube's Insight feature to track some important details about your videos.

When you're using your YouTube channel to promote a business or personality or to get the word out about a product, knowing some inside information about your videos can be a big help in tailoring your efforts to your audience. With the use of YouTube Insights, you have a number of ways you can track to find out where your traffic is coming from, where your viewers are located and other valuable information.

  1. Accessing Insights

    • YouTube allows you to track the traffic on individual videos, as well as the traffic on your channel overall. To access this information, log into your YouTube account, and click your username from the top right of the YouTube screen. Select "My Videos," and then click "Insight" next to the description of an individual video. From there, you'll be taken to an Insight page that details information about that video; but if you look on the top of the left hand column, you'll also see links to information about all of your videos. On the All Videos page, you'll see a Summary tab; this is a good page to refer to to get an overall view of all the tracking for your channel in YouTube Insight.

    Views

    • One important thing to track -- whether it's for individual views or your entire channel -- is the number of views your videos are getting. YouTube's Views feature shows the number of people who have looked at your video, separating them by date. This is crucial to track because it gives you evidence of the popularity of your video. If you have more than one video, it can help you determine whether one topic was more popular than another, and whether videos of that type are worth doing again.

    Discovery

    • When you want a video to be seen by the highest number of people, you have to find websites, social media outlets and other sites where you can promote it. By using the Discovery feature within YouTube Insight, you can find out which sites are directing the most traffic to your video. This gives you the opportunity to focus your future efforts on the most effective traffic sources and to spend less energy on the sources that are not bringing people to your videos. Because a good video is only effective if it's promoted well, this is perhaps the most important thing to track in YouTube Insight.

    Hot Spots

    • You can also track Hot Spots in YouTube Insight. This is a graphic representation of your viewers' attention to your video. By looking at the graph for each video, you can get an idea of where the viewers stopped watching. Use this information to adjust your approach for the next videos, working harder to keep viewers' attention to the end.
