A Homemade Stand for the Kindle DX
Building your own stand for the Kindle DX e-book reader can save a lot of money and provide you with a more comfortable, ergonomic way to read your digital books. There are several design factors you should take into account when putting together a homemade Kindle DX stand, including shape, material and purpose.
-
Purpose
-
Before building your own Kindle DX stand, its precise purpose should be given consideration. You might want the stand as a way to store the Kindle DX where it is less likely to be damaged, in which case a front cover might be required. Or it could be used to hold the device while you are reading, so the keyboard and/or page turn buttons will need to be accessible. Do you want to charge the Kindle DX while it's in the stand? If so, access to the USB port on the bottom of the device must be available.
Material
-
There are a variety of different materials you can use to build a homemade Kindle DX stand. These include wood, plastic, cardboard, metal or even household items or office supplies. Consider whether you are more interested in a specific purpose, aesthetic style or cost when choosing which material the stand will be made of. Also take into account what kinds of materials are readily available to you, and base your design on the supplies you can most easily acquire.

Design
-
Do you want the Kindle DX to be in its portrait orientation in your homemade stand, or will you also require it to be stable when in landscape mode? The shape of your stand should take these factors into account, as a stand could easily overbalance if you don't factor the size, shape and weight of the Kindle DX into your design. A more ambitious project might also incorporate a reading lamp into the design, if you expect to use the Kindle DX in an area with low ambient lighting.
Structure
-
The structure of your homemade stand should take the Kindle DX's dimensions and specifications into account to avoid potential damage to the device. Ensure there is adequate support to the rear of the stand to avoid it tipping backwards. The base of the stand must be wide enough to remain stable when the page turn buttons are pressed. If you intend to charge the Kindle DX while on its stand, adequate elevation must be included to allow the cable to be connected to the USB port on the bottom of the device without destabilizing the stand.
