Most birch plywood is made from Finnish and Russian birch trees. Dense, strong birch plywood is used to make everything from walls and floors to furniture, skateboards and the blades of wind turbines. Thicker plywood general contains more plies and is heavier. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Standard Panels

    • Most birch plywood is sold in standard 4-by-8-foot sheets. A quarter-inch-thick standard panel containing five plies weighs 25 lbs. A half-inch-thick panel containing seven plies weighs 50 lbs. The weight of smaller panels varies by size and thickness.

    Thin Plywood

    • A 12-by-12-inch panel 1/8 inch thick weighs a little more than 1 lb. A 12-by-24-inch panel weighs 1.4 lbs. A 12-by-36-inch panel weighs 1 3/4 lbs. A 12-by-48-inch weighs 1 3/4 lbs.
