Salary Requirements for a Program Manager
Program managers provide overall supervision, and these career professionals contribute directly to a project's success. A manager's salary depends on the size of the program and his specific duties. Pay tends to increase for larger projects and more experienced managers. A college degree in a field related to program management also increases a supervisor's pay, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The construction and architectural firms use program managers to supervise building and training programs. The BLS notes that more than 60 percent of managers in professional construction occupations in 2008 were self-employed. The median wages for construction managerial workers was nearly $80,000 a year. Union managers averaged higher wages than nonunion workers and the hourly salary figures reported by the BLS in 2008 reflected the fact that managers work seasonally. Weather and economic conditions influence their annual wage estimates.

Research and development managers working in software development earned a median salary of $116,000 in 2010, according to CNN Money. The BLS found median salaries of $71,380 for staff working as computer programmers that year. The CNN salary report noted the top 90 percent of computer programmers, typically managers and supervisors, earned an annual wage of $114,180.

The median annual wage for education administrators in charge of managing programs at the elementary and secondary levels was $86,970 in 2010, according to the BLS. Teachers who manage special programs, including advanced and remedial education, earned a median annual wage of $46,530 that year. Post-secondary education program managers took home a median salary of $56,140.

Symphony orchestras, ballet and opera companies hire program managers to network with directors, conductors and dance masters to plan for seasonal performances. Directors and program managers in music averaged nearly $46,000 in 2010, the BLS recorded. According to the College Board, managers working with dance and fine arts programs took home pay averaging $89,370 in 2009. Media program managers supervise radio and television shows. They coordinate guests and staff and work with writers and technical specialists. The BLS reported the average pay for media career professionals was $68,440 in 2010.
