History
-
DocVerse was a company founded to incorporate Microsoft Office into cloud computing. As a player in the online document-sharing industry, Google became interested in the DocVerse service. Eventually, the company purchased DocVerse in March of 2010. The DocVerse name is now Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office.
Cloud Computing
-
The original purpose of DocVerse was to enable cloud computing for Microsoft Office users. Cloud computing is the process of making personal data accessible online for viewing and sharing. For example, email services are a form of cloud computing. The next generation of cloud computing involves making all kinds of documents in various formats available for accessing and sharing online with others. The introduction of DocVerse into Google Docs is an extension of Google Doc's existing cloud-computing services.

DocVerse Uses
-
The purpose of the new DocVerse is to sync Microsoft Office documents with Google Docs. Users still create documents with Office. However, they can sync the documents with Google Docs. This makes it possible to share Office documents with colleagues and business associates. Once an Office document is uploaded, multiple users may access it and use Office to edit the document. Users of Office 2003, 2007 and 2010 may use this new version of DocVerse.
DocVerse Access
-
At the time of publication, only a limited number of Google Apps for Business customers have access to the beta version of Google Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office. The old DocVerse service is no longer available. The company has not released a date for full release to the public. However, when the old DocVerse is fully ready for launch through Google Docs, the public may get free access to the service with a Google account. If you do not have a Google account, go to the Google Accounts home page to register. Sign in at the Google Docs home page with your Google Accounts username and password; there is no separate username and password for Google Docs.
