Height of Shower Bench Seats
A shower bench is a necessity for some and a comfort for others. Temporary users might include pregnant women, arthritis and gout sufferers, and those with injuries that make if difficult to stand for long periods. A shower bench can be a permanent structure built into the shower wall, or an add-on that is purchased at the store. Does this Spark an idea?

According to North Carolina State University a seat height somewhere between 16 to 20.5 inches off the floor accommodates a wide range of users, but the best height depends upon the primary user of the bench. While comfort is important, a shower bench does not receive hours of use at one time. The most important factor is being able to lower and raise yourself to the bench without strain or possibility of slipping.
Adjustable Height

Adjustable shower seats and benches are commercially sold that meet a variety of heights. Some of these also fold out of the way when not being used. If several people use the shower this might be the best accommodation. Before purchasing the bench it is important to know how easy it is to adjust, especially in a crowded space, such as a shower. If it becomes too difficult, the feature is not of value.

Options on shower seats include an attached commode, padded seats and back rests, a side seat for a helper or companion and swivel seats to face the other way. A particularly useful feature on some seats for those who cannot raise their legs enough to step into a shower is a sliding seat. The showerer first sits on the seat outside of the shower stall and the seat slides on rails to inside the shower. As of October, 2011 inexpensive shower benches are available just under $100, while premium models cost almost $300. Medical supply companies and larger drug stores usually carry an assortment of models.
Custom Seats

Larger, custom showers often have a seat built into the side or corner. These can be of the same material as the shower walls and blend seamlessly into the decor. It is important that the seat be built over the shower pan, or the metal sub-floor, to collect any water that may drain into the seat. Because custom seats are fixed in place and material, they lack the flexibility and options of commercial seats.
