Do I Need Picasa Media Detector?
Picasa Media Detector is an application that retrieves photos from your digital camera and transfers the files to your computer. The program launches automatically when you connect your camera to your computer but you do not need the program to transfer content from your camera. You can use Windows Live Photo Gallery, a third-party application or the “drag and drop” method of transferring content to copy images and/or videos to your system.

Features
-
Picasa Media Detector is free, bundled with printer and scanner software and also available for Mac and Linux systems. During its installation process, the application loads into your computer’s startup programs and accesses your system’s Internet connection for product updates and patches. Picasa Media Detector only downloads digital pictures from your camera and transfers them to your computer. The program is not capable of moving video files.
Disabling
-
If you no longer want Picasa Media Detector to automatically launch when you connect your camera, disconnect your digital camera from your computer and open Picasa Media Detector. Click “Tools” and “Options.” Click the check box next to "Automatically detect media (show icon in the system tray)." Click “Apply” and then “OK.”
You can also uninstall Picasa Media Detector, if desired, using Windows' “Uninstall a program” within the “Programs” group of your system’s Control Panel. If you're on a Mac, click and drag the Picasa Media Detector folder to your Mac’s Trash.

Caution
-
If you have to reinstall your printer, scanner or other device’s installation disc, Picasa Media Detector may reinstall itself if the application is on that disc. Read each screen of the device’s installation wizard and look for a check box containing the wording “Install Picasa Media Detector” or similar wording. Uncheck the box to keep the device’s installation program from automatically installing Picasa Media Detector.
Transferring
-
You can use your digital camera’s content transfer application, Windows Live Photo Gallery or the “drag and drop” method of transferring content to copy pictures from your camera to your computer. If using a Mac, you can use the camera’s content transfer application, iPhoto, Mac’s Image Capture or the “drag and drop” method to move content from your digital camera to your Mac. The drag and drop method lets you click on the images or videos you want and drag them to a folder of your liking. You don’t have to move all of the images or videos from your camera to your computer using this method.
