What Would Cause an A/C Compressor to Open Its Valves?

Issues can arise with an air conditioner’s compressor so that it does not function optimally. An air conditioner’s compressor helps the refrigerant flow around the system, using pressure, so as to concentrate its heat. The compressor helps change a low-pressure refrigerant gas into high-pressure gas. One issue that arises with a compressor is when its valves open.

  1. Compressor Valves

    • Compressor valves help the compressor regulate the pressure buildup in the system. The reed valves help the refrigerant move in and out during the compressor’s pumping action. There are also typically two service valves that help service the compressor system. As well, some compressors may have a relief valve that helps manage their pressure.

    High Pressure

    • The compressor’s relief valve can open if the system’s pressure becomes higher than the pressure the valve is rated to handle. In this case, the valve will open and will stay open until the pressure goes down to what it can handle. At that point, the valve will close automatically.

    Reed Valve Seating

    • If an air conditioner compressor’s input reed valve is not positioned correctly, it can create an opening and cause a gas leak during the compressor’s pumping operation. This cuts down on the air conditioner’s cooling effect. If the reed valve at the discharge end is not in a firm position, this can also cause a leak and make the compressor work less efficiently.

    Noisy Compressor

    • Another common issue with air conditioner compressors relates to the noise they create. This may be because of the compressor’s mount or drive, especially if the unit is not uniformly noisy. For example, the unit may be creating a noise when at one speed but not creating the same noise at another speed. Typically, making the mount tighter helps with this noise issue; changing the compressor belt or adjusting its length may also help. These adjustments may solve the noise issue, instead of replacing the compressor.
