What Does Apple Shake 4 Do?

Apple’s Shake 4 is the final version of Apple’s professional video editing software. The price of the earlier versions of this software made this program prohibitively expensive for most freelance and amateur editors. Although Apple dropped the price after releasing the Shake 4 application, Apple ultimately decided to stop selling the software in July 2009.

  1. Video Editing

    • Apple’s Shake is a video editing program that offers many features similar to other video editing programs developed by Apple including Final Cut Pro and Motion. Although only slight variations in quality and usability exist between these applications, Apple marketed Shake to professional video editors. Apple also helped to justify the increased cost of this application by marketing this product exclusively to professionals.

    Shake and Compositing

    • The main difference between the Shake program and FCP or Motion is that you can also use Shake as a compositing tool. This process allows you to combine images from various sources into a single image. While this technique usually involves manipulating a digital image, Shake accomplishes compositing with the use of background color screens and allows you to combine images on these background color screens. This composting method also allows you to improve video editing.

    Post-Production Work

    • In addition to image compositing, film studios commonly used Shake for post-production editing. Traditionally, motion picture studios and editing professionals used this software application because of the high price of the application. For post-production, Shake allows you to effectively manipulate a variety of high-resolution formats, including Imax.

    Ease of Use

    • When editing video, the difficulty of a task depends greatly on what you want to do. Apple’s Shake isn't an easy program to use and requires you to have extensive knowledge about the editing process to use the software effectively. For example, the software doesn't use shortcuts like most Apple applications. This requires you to plan and execute tasks in a multi-step, methodical manner.
