Keep your eye makeup where it belongs.

Any woman with experience in makeup knows how quickly in can wear off during the course of the day. It can crease, smear or flake, downgrading your look from fabulous to frumpy. There’s no reason to throw out all your shadows and mascaras, though. There are many small things you can do to increase the longevity and freshness of your eye makeup. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Water

    • Wet your eye shadow brush before using. Eye shadow that’s wet will have a more intense color and stay put longer.

    Primer or Concealer

    • Use an eye shadow primer made specifically to go on underneath the eye shadow. Spread the primer in a thin layer. If you don’t have a primer, apply concealer or a cream foundation to your eyelids before brushing on shadow.

    Cream Shadows

    • Instead of using a powder eye shadow, try a cream shadow. Many are formulated to be long lasting, and have waterproof and crease-proof characteristics. If you like the look of powdered eye shadow, brush it on over the cream variety.

    Powder

    • To make your mascara last longer, first brush your eyelashes with a loose, translucent powder. For best results, use a small shadow brush. This will also give your mascara increased volume. A delicate application of matching powder eye shadow on top of a liquid eyeliner will keep it from running.

    Mattifying Powder

    • Mattifying powder is a very fine pressed powder designed to absorb extra oils in your skin and remove shine, as well as set your makeup. Use mattifying powder on your eyelids over primer or concealer, before the powdered shadow or on top of cream shadows. Brush it over your eyelashes to set the mascara.

    Layers

    • Multiple layers make your makeup stay on better, but use a light hand so you don’t look overly made up. Start with a neutral-colored powdered eye shadow. Follow with eyeliner and powdered eye shadow. Apply mascara, allow it to dry and apply a second coat.

    Eyelash Primer

    • Eyelash primer works well if you have problems with your mascara flaking. Apply it first, following the package directions.

    Liquid Liners

    • When it comes to eyeliners, pencils wear off and creams smear. For the perfect clear line that won’t fade or smudge, try liquid and gel liners, particularly those labeled for all day use.
