Can You Use Oven Cleaner in a Gas Oven?
Gas ovens are powered by natural gas, unlike ovens powered with electricity or fire. Like any other oven, gas ovens accumulate dirt and burned-on debris over time. Removing this grime is imperative, as it can seriously affect the efficiency and longevity of the oven itself. One method of cleaning ovens involves using an oven cleaning product specifically formulated to break down the residues and make them easily removable. Does this Spark an idea?

Oven Cleaners
-
Oven cleaners are specialized products formulated to remove oven dirt, burned-on debris and stains. These cleaners work through a combination of chemicals that react with the organic substances in the oven and in the dirt and stains. As the chemicals react with the dirt, the dirt dissolves and lifts from the surface of the oven. Once the dirt has lifted, you can easily wipe it away with a cloth. Oven cleaners offer convenience over manually cleaning the oven without chemicals.
Self-Cleaning and Regular Ovens
-
Gas ovens are either regular or self-cleaning. Self-cleaning ovens have a feature that allows the oven to heat to high temperatures for a particular length of time during this cycle. The interior surfaces of the oven become so hot that they essentially burn off any dirt, debris or stains inside the oven. Once the cycle is over and the oven cools, any leftover ashes from cleaning may be brushed out and discarded. Regular ovens do not have a self-cleaning feature and require that you manually clean them. You should avoid using oven cleaner on a self-cleaning gas oven, as this could damage the self-cleaning surfaces. Oven cleaner is perfectly safe for regular gas ovens.

Cleaning the Oven
-
Using oven cleaner in a gas oven is a straightforward process. Turn off the gas source to the oven, allow the oven to cool completely, then brush out any loose debris. Remove oven racks to facilitate cleaning the oven itself as well as the racks. Each oven cleaner has its own specific instructions for use, so always follow these instructions exactly for best results. Use the cleaner to remove stains and debris from the racks according to product directions. Once cleaning is complete, wipe the oven out once more and replace the racks. Safety is important when using oven cleaner. Only use oven cleaner in a well-ventilated room to avoid dangerous fumes.
Homemade Oven Cleaner
-
If you choose to use an over cleaner in your regular gas oven, commercial cleaners are not your only option. You can create an inexpensive and effective oven cleaner using ingredients from around the house. Pour 1/2 cup of ammonia into a bowl and place the bowl in a cold oven with the gas turned off, leaving it there overnight. The next morning, remove the bowl and oven racks from the oven, mixing the ammonia from the bowl with 1 quart of warm water. Wipe down the sides, top and bottom of the oven with the mixture, rinsing it clean and drying it when you finish. Wipe the oven racks with the solution, rinse them off and replace them in the oven.
