Looking for Craft Ideas for a First Communion thumbnail
Both Catholics and Lutherans celebrate First Communion.

First Communion is a rite of passage for many Catholics and Lutherans, marking the first reception of the sacrament of the Eucharist. To mark the occasion, you and your children can try your hand at a number of craft projects. Since the First Communicants are typically 7 years old, you should choose crafts that are appropriate for this age group. In addition to making a one-of-a-kind sentiment for the occasion, you can store the First Communion craft to have a keepsake for years to come.

  1. First Communion Banner

    • You can make a First Communion banner to display during Mass or at home. All you need is a large piece of felt, a wooden dowel, string, glue, assorted pieces of colored felt and scissors. Trace First Communion-themed items such as a chalice, dove, lamb or cross onto pieces of felt, cut them out and glue them to the large felt piece. Have your child cut the letters of her name and the date of her First Communion from the felt and glue them to the large piece of felt. Fold the top of the large piece of felt over the dowel rod and secure with glue. Tie string to the ends of the dowel rod for hanging.

    First Communion Veil

You can create a First Communion veil using a floral ring, white artificial flowers, craft tape, hot glue and a hot glue gun, tulle, lace, scissors and a needle and thread. Thread the flowers onto the floral ring or attach them with the hot glue gun; close the ends of the floral ring with craft tape. Gather the tulle by folding over the top edge and running a gathering stitch about 1 inch from the top and all the way across the top of the fabric. Pull the thread to gather it and glue the gathered portion on the taped part of the floral ring. For additional decoration, sew lace on the ends and stitch or glue on ribbon streamers.

    Bread-Making

    • At First Communion, communicants can participate in partaking of the host, which is an unleavened bread.

One crafty way to involve your First Communion guests and the children is through bread-making. Make unleavened bread while telling the Biblical story of why unleavened bread was used and how Jesus shared bread with his disciples. Prepare small loaves of unleavened bread and give them to the guests or children to take home and bake. For an added touch, have baked bread available so your guests can sample the finished product.

    Rosary Crafts

A rosary of pony beads and pipe cleaners is a quick and simple First Communion craft for children. Have the children thread 10 evenly spaced pony beads onto a pipe cleaner in the middle section of the pipe cleaner. Brings the ends around to form a circle and twist the ends shut. Add a pony bead after twisting the ends to represent “Our Father.” Twist the ends to secure this bead. Cut off one of the ends and lay it vertically across the other end; then twist them to form a cross.
