Celebrate your loved one's birthday with a legendary party.

Create an over-the-top, legendary birthday party the guest of honor and his friends will be talking about for months to come. Whether you are planning a party for children or adults, all you need are a few legendary ideas and some creativity to plan the perfect party. Talk with the birthday honoree about his favorite themes and styles, and go from there to create a memorable party. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Decades

    • Create a decade party from the guest of honor’s favorite decade. Some ideas include a 50s sock hop, a 70s disco/hippie theme or the 80s neon theme. Mail party invitations and ask all guests to dress in costumes from the corresponding decade. Have a costume contest and award prizes for the best costume. Host singing and dance contests using songs from that decade. Guests who want to perform can sing/dance individually or in groups. Have three adult judges determine the winners of the contest.

    Pool Parties

    • Children and adults can enjoy pool parties during hot summer months. Write the party details on an inflatable beach ball or small pool toy. Deflate it and mail in padded envelopes. The party guests must inflate the toy in order to read the party details. Play water games like “Marco Polo” and have swim races. Put a twist on a basic pool party by turning it into a Hawaiian luau party. Party guests can wear leis and grass skirts. Serve drinks in plastic or real coconuts. Play a game of bowling using coconuts as bowling balls and pineapples as bowling pins.

    Holidays

    • Coordinate a legendary birthday party with a holiday theme. If the birthday falls close to a holiday, such as Halloween, turn the birthday party into a “spooktacular” event. Write the party details on scary pictures of ghosts and ghouls. Turn an old shed into a scary party area with several Halloween decorations and figurines. For Christmas, create a winter wonderland party by covering the party area with artificial snow.

    Movies

    • Have the party guest select her favorite movie and plan the party theme around that movie. If she likes "Dirty Dancing," you can plan a party all about dancing and dance moves. For someone who loves the "Harry Potter" movies, decorate the party area with posters from the movies and have the guests come dressed as a character from the movie. Legendary movie party ideas children may like include the "Wizard of Oz" and "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory."
