How to Casually Wear a Suit Jacket
In most situations where a man would wear a suit jacket, the overall feel is formal. However, a suit jacket can also work in a more casual atmosphere. When you wear this type of clothing in a casual situation, it requires a different method of wearing it than buttoning the jacket up over your dress shirt. Does this Spark an idea?

Shirt
-
When you wear a suit, you typically wear a crisply-ironed dress shirt with a tie underneath a buttoned suit jacket. This look provides a formal touch to your clothing. Instead of wearing a dress shirt underneath, however, you can wear different types of shirts to create a casual look to the suit. For instance, wearing a T-shirt or polo shirt underneath the jacket gives a casual feel to the suit. You can also use a dress shirt with no tie, leaving the top button or two undone.
Pants
-
The type of pants you wear with a suit jacket contribute to the overall feel of your attire. For instance, a pair of dress pants is the preferred type of pants for a formal suit. However, you can use other types of pants for a less formal event. A pair of khaki pants still offers a business casual style with a suit jacket. If you want a completely casual look, wear a pair of jeans with your suit jacket instead.

Jacket Buttons
-
Buttoning up your suit coat all the way gives you a put-together look that allows you to look your best in a formal situation. If you are attending a less formal situation, unbuttoning one or all of the buttons gives the suit jacket a casual feel. Leaving the jacket open gives you more freedom of movement and takes away the illusion of formality from the jacket. Even if the shirt underneath is buttoned to the top, an unbuttoned suit jacket still looks more casual.
Type of Jacket
-
While any type of suit jacket can provide a casual look when worn with the right shirt and pants, some types look better than others. For instance, you wouldn't want to wear a suit coat with tails in a casual manner. Instead, choose a single-breasted jacket with two or three buttons to create your casual look. These suit jackets can give your the versatility of casual or formal based on the shirt, pants and shoes with which you pair it.
