Good breath is important when going on a first date.

Bad breath is caused by food particles decaying in your mouth and the bacteria that feed on them. Bad breath is an embarrassing problem and may strike when you are in a social situation without access to toothpaste. Fortunately, unless you suffer from severe dental or health problems that require medical attention, alternative methods exist that allow you to rescue yourself from embarrassing bad breath. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Toothbrush

    • Brush your teeth without toothpaste. If you are traveling and forgot your toothpaste or have just a toothbrush at work, brushing with water will still eliminate bacteria and food particles from your teeth. You won’t cover up the smell of bad breath the way toothpaste does, but you will be eliminating the cause.

    Dental Floss

    • Use dental floss. Bacteria and food particles trapped in the spaces between your teeth can cause bad breath even if you brush regularly. Floss is also small, compact and easier to carry around during the day than a toothbrush and toothpaste.

    Gum and Mints

    • Chew sugar-free cinnamon gum and eat sugar-free cinnamon breath mints. According to the Web MD website, the chemical used to flavor these cinnamon products decreases the level of odor-causing bacteria in your mouth, eliminating the need for toothpaste if you notice bad breath between regular brushings.

    Hydration

    • Carry a bottle of water with you at all times and increase your daily liquid consumption. Web MD reports that a dry mouth and dehydration cause oral bacteria to grow excessively. Maintaining a wet mouth and a hydrated body will keep bad breath at bay.

    Carbohydrates

    • Eat extra carbohydrates such as a piece of bread, especially if you are on a low-carb diet. According to WebMD, these diets are known for causing bad breath. Consuming a small amount of carbs won’t ruin your weight-loss plan and will prevent your breath from smelling unpleasant during the day.
