Skype Problems With an Android

Skype is a cross-platform Voice-over-IP application.

An official Skype application for Android devices is available to download and install from the Android Market. Alternatively the app can be downloaded from skype.com/m through the Android Web browser. A free Skype account is required to use the app. If you are experiencing problems with the application there are a number of simple troubleshooting checks and solutions to work through.

  1. Skype App Not Loading or Functioning

    • If the Skype app refuses to load or doesn't function at all, uninstall the app from the Applications menu under Settings then download and install it afresh from the Android Market. Check your mobile phone or tablet device is compatible with the Skype Android app -- a full list of compatible devices can be found on the Skype app page on the Android website. The device must be running Android 2.2 or later. Video calling is only available on devices running Android 2.3 or later.

    User Or Password Not Recognized

    • If you are having trouble logging into the Skype Android app, check you have a working connection to the Internet by running another app, the stock Android Web browser and attempting to transfer data. Ensure you have entered the correct username and password combination by entering them on another device or computer. Note that the Android app only accepts passwords up to 20 characters in length, unlike Skype for Windows and Skype on other platforms. If your password is longer than this, you will need to alter it from a computer or different device before using Skype for Android.

    Problems with Audio Quality

    • You may experience issues with audio quality when using the Skype app. To resolve the issue, try exiting the call screen to disable the proximity sensor, use a 3G connection for calling rather than a Wi-Fi one, plug in a headset to make the call or upgrade to Android 2.3 or later. Make sure you are running the latest version of the Skype app by opening the Market app and checking for updates. Ensure that the issue is specifically related to the Skype tool by recording or playing audio from another app from the Android Market.

    Further Help and Support

    • As a general rule try resetting the Android device and check you are running the latest version of the Skype app by opening the Market and checking for updates. The best resource for troubleshooting issues with the Skype Android app is the official support section of the Skype website at support.skype.com. Use the search box at the top of the page to look for official article tutorials covering the issue you are experiencing -- the more detail you include here, the easier it is to find relevant posts. If you are unable to find assistance, look through the posts on the Skype community forums and start a new thread if the issue hasn't already been covered.
